Swan Derby: adding an aerial view to a live event

At a live event, the moment does not wait for the camera. That is part of what we enjoy about this work, and why the preparation matters.
For the April 2026 Swan Derby in Lakeland, I joined MABE’s production effort to provide drone coverage. MABE was bringing an aerial perspective into the event coverage, and our role was to contribute that view as part of the wider team.
Showing how the action fits the setting
An aerial camera can help an audience understand an event on the water. It shows the relationship between the activity, the waterfront and the people watching. A closer camera gives the viewer a different kind of detail. The value comes from how those perspectives work together.
That is how we approach an assignment like Swan Derby. The drone is one part of the coverage, with a specific job to do. It should help the production tell the event’s story and give the team a useful view at the right moment.
Joining the production already in motion
Working through a production partner means understanding its plan. We discuss the role, the working location and what the team needs from the coverage. Clear communication makes it easier to contribute without pulling attention away from the rest of the show.
We enjoyed bringing that aerial perspective to the April 24 event and appreciated the opportunity to work with MABE again.
For us, the lesson is straightforward: show up prepared, understand the assignment and stay attentive to the moment in front of you. Those habits matter whether we are covering an event for a client directly or supporting another production company.
